The search and picking of truffles is referred to in French as "cavage". Cavage is most often conducted with the help of a dog: he detects mature truffles by sniffing the ground. The dog then searches for the truffle in order to get his reward.

| Cavage may also be conducted with a pig, the animal being naturaly enclined to look for truffles in order to eat them.
A few passionate truffle specialists detect truffles in sunny weather by looking for a small fly. This fly looks for truffles in order to lay its eggs in them. |
